ZWYN Urban Gym: Where Fitness Meets Art and Design

A New Wave of Inspired Fitness in Beijing's Sanlitun District

The gym's design, created by the renowned design firm anySCALE, draws inspiration from urban culture, design, sports, and art. The result is a space that seamlessly blends functionality with aesthetic appeal.

The design team took inspiration from three key sources: the client's music list, a captivating video installation in the entrance area, and the client's request for the prominent use of gunpowder grey. The execution of the design aimed to transport customers into another world, allowing them to forget the worries of their lives as they worked on achieving their fitness goals.

What sets ZWYN Urban Gym apart is its minimalistic yet ethereal atmosphere. The space features high-end fittings on neutral grey tones, creating a clean and chic aesthetic. Massive LED screens display artworks, adding a touch of sophistication to the environment. Double-layer semi-transparent walls made of glass and polycarbonate provide soothing indirect light while also capturing the attention of gym-goers.

The realization of the design involved meticulous planning and collaboration between the design team, the client, and contractors. The team had the freedom to create customized items such as illumination panels, lockers, and built-in furniture, resulting in a space that perfectly aligns with the client's vision.

With a total area of 850 square meters, ZWYN Urban Gym offers a variety of fitness facilities and amenities to cater to different workout preferences. From weight training to cardio exercises, the gym provides a comprehensive range of equipment and spaces to meet the needs of its members.

One of the design challenges faced by the team was the low, tight, and cluttered spaces and ceiling. To overcome this, backlit paneling and transparent metal mesh were used to cover ceiling installations, creating a neat and pure effect while maintaining an open-ceiling environment. Additionally, the woven vinyl flooring from Bolon was fitted with a special subfloor in the weight training section to ensure a softer landing for heavy weights.

ZWYN Urban Gym is not just a place to work out; it is a sanctuary designed to motivate and inspire. The clean, pure, and minimalistic environment allows gym-goers to find their own interpretation of the physical space, creating a personalized experience that goes beyond the typical gym setting.

The project, which started in May 2015 and finished in May 2016, showcases the dedication and creativity of the design team in bringing their vision to life. ZWYN Urban Gym stands as a testament to the power of design in enhancing the fitness experience.

For its outstanding design and innovative approach, ZWYN Urban Gym was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
